How Doctors Fix a Collapsed Lung - The Simple Design of Chest Tubes
Просмотров 65 тыс.4 года назад
Collapsed lung, or pneumothorax, can be a life threatening emergency. The usual treatment is the insertion of a chest tube. Though the tube itself is simple, the design of the draining system is interesting. Hope you learn something, enjoy! - Don

This is definitely more for the formal interview styles (which is still the most common for residency), and not for the MMI formats, which a lot of schools use now fo...
I Studied 8 Languages During Medical School [w/ subtitles]
Просмотров 16 тыс.5 лет назад
I love languages. I spent that last few years trying to fit language learning into my schedule, which was not easy. I don't consider that I speak 8 languages, but I have studied all of them to some extent in the past few years. The level of proficiency needed to conduct a thorough medical assessment in a language is very high, which I would only be comfortable doing in English or French. Also, ...
How Much Money Do Resident Doctors Earn? Is it Worth the Hours?

Hey everyone, I wanted to talk about a sensitive topic in an objective way, because there's a lot of misinformation around resident physicians' pay, hours and working conditions. Thank you. I have pneumonia and tasted blood for the first time this morning. I am on antibiotics at home. I had x-rays and it is an atelectasis. Should I go to the ER? I'm 57 and do not smoke but extremely allergic to man-made chemical fragrances and cleaners.

I recently realised i didn't want any surgical branch ever . And to think that i was going to opt for obgyn in my residency just because i am getting it and everyone is telling me to ..i think i was gonna make the biggest mistake of my life. Surgical branches do shine brighter than medical branches..but not everyone is chasing the "highs".. some ppl like myself like it when its peaceful. And i am not going to be ashamed of it.

As a PGY-2 FM resident, I am finding so much opportunities for my career. From outpatient clinic, hospital medicine, sports medicine, emergency medicine, OB, etc…there’s so many pathways to take with our specialty. There are still quite rigorous and brutal rotations within the program where you have to take call every 4th day as well…or do night shift for 2 weeks in a row and only 1 day off, but you eventually get small breaks in between with rotations that allow weekends off and regular day shift hours. I applaud your openness about your decision. Thanks for sharing your story.

add politics to medicine. while i was a resident in nyc some decades ago spoke with gen surgery residents in prestigious nyc hospitals. not uncommon to do an additional 6th year even after completing the 5 year program duration. this 6th year was done at a residents salary though functioning as an attending. doing this made for smooth sailing to gain admitting privileges at said hospital. akin to extortion.

Medicine in America is a racket. My advice to young people is to NOT choose a career in medicine. If one has enough ability to get into medical school, then one without question has more than sufficient talent to excel in law, business and or tech, career paths that involve more pay, reduced debt and less subjugation. Physicians today are nothing more than slave vassals to healthcare corporate executives and their ravenous shareholders. Just say no to medicine.
